48hr International Challenge
In January this year I was trying to catch up with “decluttering” one of the rooms in my house and sitting there was my most prized trophy ever – the one for winning the Surgères 48 Hour Race in France in 2009, where I ran my best performance ever of 433.686 kilometres.
One look at this trophy brought back a huge string of fond memories about that race and that trip to France and how lucky I had been to be spoilt by all of the people I met there. As a travelling runner I was welcomed so freely and treated with so much love and respect it was very humbling.
It struck me that my special trophy should not be sitting in this room gathering dust anymore but should be re-badged and reinvigorated so that the blood, sweat and tears of that achievement along with the profound spirit of international understanding that it represented to me, could be shared to foster the same spirit at our very own CBR48Hr race.
This new perpetual trophy will be awarded to the best Male and Female performances in the 48 Hour event for participants that are non-Australian citizens and that have travelled to Australia for this race from a foreign country. Their names will be inscribed on the perpetual trophy and a small companion trophy will be presented to each of the recipients by CBR48Hr so that they can take a traveller-friendly version home as a memento.
I encourage all of our local participants to warmly welcome and encourage our international runners and to do whatever they can to make their trip and their race a wonderful memory of a lifetime.
